Orca's Emerging Vision for a K-8 Alternative School
An Orca Portrait: Walk through Orca and take it all in: self-portraits on one wall, insect projects on a table, a parent working with some children in the hall. Listen to students preparing to debate the Bill of Rights or chewing on a problem in a class meeting. Follow sounds out to the garden where children explore the links between seeds, water, dirt, sun and one another.

Kindergarten at Orca
Orca’s kindergartners are active, busy learners. During the full-day kindergarten class they measure, compute and annotate in their science journals. Digging, planting and harvesting takes place in the garden. Students gather and mix ingredients, bake bread and toss salads. Orca kindergarteners read about Helen Keller, Fredrick O. Douglas and others. They practice social democracy by voting on a class president and cabinet each week. Students write and read their own work on a daily basis and, at the end of the year, they make their own books and present them at the Young Author’s Festival.
